A Walk Down Memory Lane Part II

Barb in the pink nightgown, me in the white, telling her little brother a bedtime story.
Now that I'm sufficiently over the trauma of the comments like "I love your 'old' photos!" I'm back with more!  I guess my childhood photo's are considered vintage now...how did that happen?!?!
When we moved to Canada in 1983 I befriended a skinny, freckle faced girl named Barbara.  She was a couple of years younger than me but she had the Mother of all Barbie doll collections...so I made her one of my new best friends.  Plus, her family had an above the ground pool which was a big deal at that time...nobody in my Canadian town had a pool.
Our parents were all friendly so sometimes Barb and I would put together little fashion shows and charge our families admission then we would spend all our earnings on candy.
Barb and I in the pink shirts with the sweaters tied around because she ALWAYS copied my style!!!  I'm the taller one.
After living on the same street for a couple of years her mom and dad split up and eventually divorced.  Not too long after that my parents split up and Barb's dad began showing up at my house more and more and more often.  Hmmmm...
Hula dancing!  She's copying me again!!!
It wasn't very much later on that Barb's dad had moved into our house and Barb, along with her younger brother and sister, spent every other weekend with us.  We took vacations to a place called Wasaga Beach two years in a row.
Barb in her nightgown which just so happened to be identical to one I had!
I can't say it was always easy, Barb was constantly copying me and I would complain to my mom "Mom, she's wearing the same sweater as me again!".  My mom would respond with "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery".
Barb is a pleaser, so she would follow me around asking "Vick, are you mad at me?  Are you mad at me?"...it had just somehow been so much easier when we were friends and not impending step-sisters!
Barb with the white sweater on, me in the blue top.
We left Canada for So Cal in 1982, Barb's dad and my mom got married leaving my 3 step-siblings behind.  We really didn't see much of them.  But when Barb was 16 she came to stay here for a couple of weeks in the summer, she decided she wanted to live with us and it was during that time we really bonded and got very close.
Now she's one of my best friends in the whole world, I can't imagine life without Barb in it!  We've been there for each other through so much...she's a mom to 2 adorable little girls now and a beautiful, fun, hardworking woman...she's my Sister from another Mr:)

How wonderful that you and Barb have each other. I had long-wondered if she was the "sister and her 2 girls" on your sidebar, as I knew you only had 1 brother...biologically anyway.

While imitation is a sincere form of flattery, in my experience it has also been a way of competing. It's been my experience that the person doing the copying is really trying to surpass the one they are copying, and a rivalry often builds up.

Anyhow, I love the photos. Very cute.

Oh no rivalry at all between us Patti...it was more like "MOI" thinking I was the only one allowed to wear sparkle legwarmers, groovy 80's headbands and some other lovely early 80's fashions:) And Barb that I was soooooo cool LOL.
